Green Room No. 1 marks the second instalment of a space curated and designed by Mzwakhe Ndlovu of ZOMUZI and SUBJECT BUREAUX for WSA at Collectible Fair 2025. It continues an ongoing exploration of the meaning of community—and how collaborative thinking among peers shapes, and is shaped by, contemporary design.
Titled after the spaces in theatres or studios where performers can relax when they are not performing, Green Room No. 1 invites these immensely talented designers to bring their pieces in place of themselves, and engage in dialogue with one another as they would in a green room. The room will be programmed, allowing participating designers and spectators alike to engage in critical (or casual) discussions about design, life, community, culture, commerce, or anything else that may be top of mind at that time.
Set in a pseudo-domestic environment, Green Room No. 1 presents extraordinary design pieces within a framework of the ordinary, suggesting familiarity while provoking curiosity. At the centre of the space sits a table whose outline mirrors the footprint of the room itself. Designed without a “head,” the table rejects hierarchy: no one position holds more importance than another. Instead, it offers three sides for gathering, three sides for dialogue, and three sides of the story—the story the space tells, the story the objects tell, and the story the audience brings. Visitors are invited to experience Green Room No. 1 at any point during the fair, to engage with the works, and—just as importantly—to engage with one another.
